One of the best places in Honolulu amazing food and service. The fish is local and they have a prefix this is well priced and Ala carte is also well done.

Everything here is delicious and reasonably priced. Service is friendly and prompt and the building is very clean and has a sleek design. Came as a walk in on a Saturday night and was able to get a table quickly.

We had dinner at Izakaya Nonbei because it was the most interesting of the handful of restaurants that would take a same-day Monday night reservation for a party of 12. I booked in a near panic two hours in advance, tasked with finding a place to feed and water two minivans full of extended family, ranging in age from three months to 67 years. As it turned out, Izakaya Nonbei was exactly the place we needed. It was casual and fun, a low-key spot where we could eat and drink at our leisure with nine adults and three small kids. We took over two tables in the upstairs dining area, and the vibe was super pleasant and comfortable (and the elderly Japanese people at the only other table seemed, if anything, charmed by our children, who were surprisingly well behaved). Service was friendly and quick, and we enjoyed a splendid meal with several bottles of sake. The food was great. Izakaya Nonbei has a broad menu covering several subgenres of Japanese fare, and everything we tried was at least solid. We ordered several of the signature dishes, helpfully designated as such on the menu, and this was a good move. The agedashi tofu was lovely, crispy fried tofu served in housemade broth, topped with grated mountain yam. The nasu kinoko was a table favorite, a medley of mushrooms and eggplant sautéed in a fragrant butter sauce. Misoyaki butterfish was classically delicious, miso-marinated gindira broiled just right. Likewise the kurobuta kakuni, an izakaya staple of tender, slow-cooked shoyu pork belly, served with a side of mustard. The tori kara was crispy, juicy fried chicken with ponzu sauce for dipping. The only signature that didn't quite hit was the wafu steak, a New York steak with a garlic and onion sauce. Not bad, but not a top quality steak. We ordered several other Japanese restaurant standbys, and they were all quite satisfying. The housemade pork gyoza with chives were tasty, and the udon and yakisoba were popular with adults and children alike. I was actually shocked by how well my picky four-year-old ate the yakisoba. Izakaya Nonbei also does sushi, though it isn't primarily a sushi bar. I had a couple nigiri from my dad's 10-piece omakase set and thought they were decent. I liked the rolls, too, which were ideal for sharing. We got the Nonbei spicy roll with ahi, avocado, and cucumber and the dragon roll, a California roll with unagi on top. This was the last dinner of our trip and I'm glad it was such a success. I'd be an Izakaya Nonbei regular if I lived in town, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a stress-free meal in Honolulu.

We came here for dinner to meet up with some friends. They have a tiny lot upfront but they have a larger lot in the back which looks a bit ghetto and abandoned. The food and service were great. We were impressed by the food and cleanliness of the restaurant.

Excellent fresh sushi!! We came here for my friend's birthday dinner and everything tasted delicious. We ordered the chef's nigiri set which was so so yummy 10/10. I loved every fish that was selected and it was more than enough for 2 people to share. Our waiter was very patient and accommodating. I also enjoyed the cozy interior which brought me back to Japan.

Just tucked away in Kapahulu, right across safeway is where you can find this place. To be honest, I didn't realize that this place existed until my friend introduced to me. Upon entering, you are greeted by the most friendliest staff. We were seated fairly quickly for 2 people - although we settled for the counter. Side note, if you want a table it's important that you make a reservation!! Food was amazing! We got the most recommended, the wafu steak, deep fried flounder, spicy hamachi roll, and the chawamushi! Honestly everything that we order was amazing and we came out of this place very pleased! Definitely recommend this place who are within the area and is craving some Japanese dishes!

Was recommended this place by a couple people, so we stopped in one Sunday. Resers were easy to make for 5, day of, online, which I appreciate. We were seated about 15 minutes past our reservation, which wasn't a big deal to me (lotta places short-handed). Waiters were all nice. The prices looked a little daunting, but pretty typical for an izakaya joint. A couple of us got the Nigiri Omakase, which for $55 I thought was a fair deal, just could have done without the ebi and tamago (def just stomach space fillers for me). My biggest disappointment of this place was the uni. I was excited for this nigiri, as there was fresh Japanese uni listed on the specials menu and I've been craving some good uni. This was not that. Omg still gagging thinking about the smell, it must've been bad or not fresh or something but genuinely tasted like I was slurping up trash juice. Probably some of the worst uni I've had, I probably should've said something at the time. However, I covered it--out of sight out of mind--and went on enjoying the rest of the yummier fish. Some others in the party got hirame karaage (D-lish), maguro sash (pretty good) and a tempura roll (also very yummy). Probably would try somewhere else before revisiting, but overall not bad at all! Our bill wasn't crazy for 5 people and we all enjoyed ourselves. Sending fresh uni prayers your way..

Aloha, lucky us we had our post Holiday company party upstairs at Izakaya Nonbei. Besides the main dinning room downstairs, there are 3 private areas upstairs and a coed restroom, nice you only have to trek up but just once. Great atmosphere and service was superb. Food came out at a very steady pace and my beer and sake glass was kept full. The crab salad was delicious as well as all the fresh fish. Good quality sushi, would definitely be back again and again. We could make all the noise we wanted during our games. So fun! Enjoy!

Izakaya Nonbei is easy to find, right off of Kapahulu Avenue. We had a friends dinner here and to my surprise, the restaurant is very spacious with tables that can fit bigger parties. The only downfall is their parking lot is small and quite tight. However, free parking is still a plus! I really enjoy eating izakaya style in which you order a variety of smaller plates. Perfect for a variety lover like myself! I ordered the Kurobuta Pork Katsu, Agedashi Tofu, Korokke, and Garlic Hotate. Everything cooked well and delicious. I ended my meal with a sweet, refreshing Strawberry Dream w/ add on Mochi and Ice Cream! The service was great! Everyone was friendly and made sure to keep our waters refilled. I'll definitely be back!

My relatives were visiting from the mainland during the holidays and they invited us to try Izakaya Nonbei. The restaurant were 2 floors where they offer counter seatings, table seatings, and private room for larger parties. Since we were a large party, we sat in the private room on the second floor. Karei Karaage: The fried fish flounder was alright. It was crispy but not much flavor or seasoning. The bones were also edible and crunchy deep fried. Ika Dynamite: When I think of dynamite, I expected a baked dish with torched dynamite cream sauce on top. However, it is a fried squid with unagi and spicy mayo sauce drizzled on top. The fried squid tasted fine. It was like the fried squid from Genki Sushi. Just the labelled "dynamite" was misleading. Nonbei Spicy Ahi Roll: I always get spicy tuna every time we visit a sushi restaurant. The spicy tuna roll was good. Good amount of fresh spicy tuna in the roll and a raw ahi sushi on top. Dragon Roll: The dragon roll was good. It's basically a California roll with a unagi on top. It would be great if there was also a slice of avocado on top along with the unagi. Spider Roll: The spider roll was also good. The soft shell crab was meaty and crispy. Chawanmushi: This was not bad. The egg custard was savory and firm. Good amount of chicken and shrimp. Misoyaki Butterfish: The butterfish was alright. It was a little on a charred/burnt side but the butterfish flavor was good. Sushi Sampling "C" Course: We asked our server what sashimi is included in the C course since the menu stated "today's" fresh fish so we thought the sashimi would change daily. The server said whatever is shown on the picture, which was not helpful since there was no description of the sashimi included for the C course. Regardless, the sashimi we recognized were salmon, ahi, hamachi, and scallop. We not sure what the other 2 types were. The sashimi were fresh. Overall, the foods were not bad. The sushi rolls were my favorite. Their fried dishes and other appetizers were a little on a plain/bland side but their sushi/sashimi were fresh and delicious.
